Tesco is selling these 'chocolate new potatoes' for Christmas - but what even are they?

We found out more about the baffling sweet spuds.

POTATOES? GREAT. Chocolate? Brilliant. But together? We’ll give it a pass.

Twitter user Aoife Bennett spotted this extremely strange sight on the shelves of the Tesco in the Jervis Street Shopping Centre, Dublin:

Chocolate. New. Potatoes.

Just so we’re clear that it’s not a shared hallucination – the chocolate new potatoes appear to be part of Tesco’s Christmas range, and are up on the UK website for £3.50.

There are also some ‘chocolate truffle sprouts’ as part of the same range – they look marginally more appetising:

We have many questions, the most pertinent of which is WHY?

DailyEdge.ie contacted Tesco to find out more – worry not, they’re not actual potatoes stuffed with chocolate:

Made by Lir Chocolates exclusively for Tesco Ireland, the New Potatoes are delicious milk chocolate ganache smothered in white chocolate… The festive sprouts are decorated milk chocolate ganache truffles.

Both products are €3.99 and available in stores nationwide. Well now.

Thanks to Aoife Bennett for the photo
